30 Days of Resume Tips: Part 2

Let’s jump right back in.

Last week we talked about resume tips 1-15.

We are going to go through the remainder of them today.

Remember that I’ve had the privilege of reviewing more than 100,000 resumes; and if there’s a consistent theme… it’s that no one really knows how to write them.  But after today you will be 30 steps closer.

16. Leave off personal information (social security number, # of children, marital status) 


17. Don’t have an objective – have an executive summary


18. Font size should be 11-12


19. Use a headline at the top of your resume “Talent Acquisition Leader”

 
20. Choose a chronological resume format, most recent job starting

21. Remove ‘references available upon request’


22. Save your resume as some version of your name “Mustain Resume” and not “amazing resume 13”


23. Get a proofreader. In fact, get two of them


24. Avoid using hobbies and interests


25. Add relevant certifications

26. Avoid using All Caps


27. Avoid adding fancy graphics and diagrams unless you’re a creative 
professional


28. Limit to one or 2 fonts only


29. Don’t use colored font


30. Used job description to create your experience – highlight accomplishments, not daily tasks.


Remember, your resume is a living document. It is not a one-size-fits-all for all jobs.  You should always tailor it to fit the description of each job you are going after (remember tip #9).
