Admittedly, I’m not a Philly resident, or a very good football fan in general. However, the annual tradition of the Super Bowl always seems to perk my interest. This year the emergence of a true Cinderella story captured the hearts of millions across America.

The Eagles’ victory came at a shock to pros betting in Vegas with the favored Patriots receiving a 4.5 spread according to betting site SportsLine. Then at game time, we watched the Eagles’ earn their first Vince Lombardi Trophy setting the city of brotherly love ablaze with passion and fever for their home team.

The reasons why the Eagles weren’t favored and should have lost is truly what made them great. There are a lot of themes to this message that also apply to those who are job searching today.

1. You can be the underdog.

By all considerations, the Patriots came in with 5 Super Bowl rings and a veteran quarterback. The Eagles’ were just the team in the way of the Patriots’ 6th Lombardi Trophy.

What you can learn from it:

Just because someone might be more qualified, have more education, or some other mythical quality, does not mean that you shouldn’t show up to play the game. Get in the job searching game with a strong resume, persuasive elevator pitch, and compelling value proposition and start networking.

2. When you’re ready to quit, know you’re not alone.

If you were to look at the total money bet on the championship game – each team, both Patriots’ and Eagles’, received about equal share. That means that even though the Eagles’ were ‘outgunned’ they were championed by many.
What you can learn from it:

Find a champion and accountability partner in your job search. When faced with rejection, recognize that this is not an indication of your success, but as one step bringing you closer to the right career opportunity. Keep going.

3. You are more talented than you realize.

Nick Foles was the contingency plan. With starting quarterback Carson Wentz on the team, he was relegated to second fiddle. An ACL injury thrust Nick Foles into the spotlight and straight into the record books. Foles took on the massive obligation of leading a team onto America’s greatest stage. Not only did he come away with a win, he also came away with the MVP title.
What you can learn from it:

Just because you haven’t been recognized as the high-quality candidate you are, doesn’t change the fact that you are someone of worth, with value, and has a great deal to contribute to a new role and organization. Do not lose faith.
