Looking for your next job? First step - time to do a little #onlinecreeping...

Creeping: Online investigative skills usually intended to seek out old boyfriends and girlfriends, obsessing over their new followers and likes and who replaced you in #bae photos. Not a particularly useful past time, but it does hone a skill set. Instead of wasting hours bemoaning what could have been, what if you used those detective skills to land a new job?

Focus on Specific Targets :
Online stalking works best when you have one or two specific companies in mind that you really want to work for. Focusing your investigation allows you to get a deep level of knowledge on how the organization operates instead of just a general idea of a company and its tagline. What is their mission statement? What core values do they embrace? How does the company promote diversity? What is their 5-year strategy plan?

Where to Stalk :
Almost every company has an online presence and freely shares a wealth of information. What can you learn from their official website? What white pages or case studies have they published? Is there a company blog you can follow? Have they been profiled in the news lately? What social media profiles do they have? LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, Glassdoor? Does the company contribute to any industry websites or organizations? Does it have ties to a specific philanthropy?

Now you know the WHERE - Here is the HOW...

Engage - Don’t just follow the company’s social media pages, ENGAGE! Comment on posts, like their photos, share their tweets. Don’t engage once or twice and consider it complete, participate with their accounts on a regular basis. Your name and face constantly appearing on different channels will get the attention of someone within the organization.

Using Social Media to Connect - After following and engaging with the company’s official online outlets and social media accounts, you can also reach out to contacts within the company (if it feels appropriate). If you’re looking for a job in digital marketing, connect with those in the digital marketing department. Avoid sending a bland connection request, but specify why you are reaching out. “Hi, I’m __, and I’m really interested in working on the digital marketing team at {insert company name}. I’d love to connect and learn more about what brought you to the organization and what kind of candidate they look for. How has your experience been? Thank you for your time!”

Creating Offline Conversations - After landing the coveted job interview, use all the information and insights you have learned to your advantage, and impress the interviewer with how familiar you are with the company. Many hiring managers lament how little an interviewee knows about the company they are applying for, but being knowledgeable and sincere in your desire to join that organization will set you apart from the competition.

Building a relationship with your future employer takes time....

Sincere online engagement takes time to build, and probably won’t result in an overnight interview offer. Fostering relationships will give you a strong sense of a company’s culture and what values they encourage, and prepare you to be their (soon to be) next employee. Happy stalking!

Talent Hack was founded by Lindsay Mustain, #asklindsay. I am a recruiter by trade and a humanist by condition. The existential question that drives me is "How can I help you?" Marrying together my expertise in talent acquisition and candidate experience this question becomes "How can I help you find your dream opportunity?"

My vision is to one day help organizations realize the impact of valuing human beings as people and not as pieces of paper. Until that time, I share unapologetic advice and job search strategies that work within the current system. Learn more at: www.talentparadigm.co/services

I help to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers through branding, the candidate experience and journey, along with disruptive talent acquisition strategies. My journey at Amazon led me to becoming their most visible employee by speaking on talent attraction, candidate experience (CandX), and humanizing the talent acquisition process.

I launched Talent Paradigm in 2017 with the goal of leveling the playing field for candidates in the job seeking process. My organization provides coaching, resume writing, branding, and consulting services and products to help improve candidate outcomes.
